África Brasil by Jorge Ben

Released in
1976
Genre
Samba, MPB, Funk & Rock
Front and back covers, with the back cover depicting Jorge Ben's backing band for this album, “Admiral Jorge V,” formed for his previous record, “Solta o Pavão” (1975) (+ additional musicians)

África Brasil (1976) is Jorge Ben's 14th studio album. By this point, Jorge had been releasing albums for 13 years, steadily honing his distinct “samba-rock” style to perfection, going through a variety of backing band changes and experimenting with different moods and styles but always retaining one central aspect: the acoustic guitar. Following “A Tábua de Esmeralda,” however, Jorge Ben was looking for a new challenge, and, after jamming with Gilberto Gil on “Ogum Xangî” and amplifying his guitar on “Solta o Pavão,” he took his most daring leap yet: he went electric.

This album sees Jorge Ben totally abandon the acoustic guitar for the electric, bringing the American funk and soul elements of his sound to the forefront while at the same time deftly fusing them with samba-rock and Afro-Brazilian percussion. Despite this dramatic shift in direction, the album was a great success at the time.

This song was inspired by a very skilled African striker named “Babaraum,” who Jorge saw play while visiting Paris. In this song, Babaraum becomes “Umbabarauma,” and is assigned the position of second striker, which, in Brazil, is known as the “ponta de lança,” meaning “spear tip”—possibly harkening to the weapons of traditional African warriors.

One of Jorge Ben's greatest hits—arguably his most popular song ever. This version is a re-recording, with the original track having been first released on his 1972 record “Ben.”

00:58

That I've ever been told
Yes, this line is a bit incoherent. Either the previous line should be “it's *the* most beautiful love story” (like he sings in the version on the “Gil e Jorge” album) or this line should be “That I was told and now will tell you” (like he sings live.) Here, he sings it this way instead... Who knows, maybe it's some super advanced symbolism, breaking the rules of grammar as a metaphor for etc. etc.—or maybe it's just a fun song, and the lyrics don't matter that much.

Jorge Ben will explain it pretty thoroughly, but, for completeness: Francisca da Silva de Oliveira (1732-1796,) nicknamed “Chica”/“Xica,” was a slave who, after becoming her master's lover, was granted freedom, going on to live an extragavagant lifestyle as the lover of a nobleman. Her story is very famous in Brazil, and has been much mythologised, with everything from soap operas to books (and, as you'll hear, songs) being made in honor of her confrontation of the gender and racial norms of the time.

— Hey, xará!
“Xará,” from the indigenous tupi “xa'ra,” means someone with the same name as you. It's common for friends with the same name to refer to eachother using this word.

This song is an ode to Zico, largely considered the greatest player in the history of Flamengo, Jorge Ben's favourite football team. Like many great footballers, Zico wore the #10 jersey.

00:31

A foul near the penalty box
É falta na entrada da área

00:31

Guess who's going to kick?
Adivinha quem vai bater?

00:36

It's the #10 from the GĂĄvea
A neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro, where Flamengo is based
É o camisa 10 da Gávea

00:40

It's the #10 from the GĂĄvea
É o camisa 10 da Gávea

00:46

He has a style
Ele tem uma dinĂąmica

00:50

That is physical, rich and rhythmic
FĂsica, rica e rĂtmica

00:55

His lucid reflexes
Seus reflexos lĂșcidos

01:00

Plays, bewildering dribbles
Lançamentos, dribles desconcertantes

01:02

Cunning kicks
Chutes maliciosos

01:08

Are like electrifying flashes
SĂŁo como flashes eletrizantes

01:11

Blowing out the net
Estufando a rede

01:13

In a possibly amazing goal
I translated it as “amazing” but the real expression used is a fun bit of trivia: In 1961, PelĂ© scored a goal so incredible that a plaque was built on the stadium to commemorate it. After that, it became common to refer to beautiful or impressive goals as “plaque goals”—as if to say that they too deserve to be put on a plaque. That's the term that Jorge Ben is using in the original Portuguese.
Num possĂvel gol de placa

01:16

Blowing out the net
Estufando a rede

01:18

In a possibly amazing goal
Num possĂvel gol de placa

01:20

Goal, goal!
É gol, Ă© gol!

01:22

A foul near the penalty box
É falta na entrada da área

01:25

Guess who's going to kick?
Adivinha quem vai bater?

01:30

It's the #10 from the GĂĄvea
É o camisa 10 da Gávea

01:34

It's the #10 from the GĂĄvea
É o camisa 10 da Gávea

01:40

The galinho de Quintino
Zico's nickname, literally, “cockerel from Quintino.” Quintino is the name of the neighbourhood he lived in as a child, and “cockerel” came from his lean build.
is here
O galinho de Quintino chegou

01:43

Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Ô-îî, î-î-îî

01:48

With grit, strength of will, and love
Com garra fibra e amor

01:52

Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Ô-îî, î-î-îî

01:57

He may not be a perfect player
Pode nĂŁo ser um jogador perfeito

02:01

But his cunning makes him be remembered
Mas a sua malĂcia o faz com que seja lembrado

02:05

Because even when he's not inspired
Pois mesmo quando nĂŁo estĂĄ inspirado

02:09

He searches for inspiration
Ele procura a inspiração

02:14

And each goal, each pass, each play
E cada gol, cada toque, cada jogada

02:18

Is a delight for the lovers of the british sport
É um deleite para os apaixonados do esporte bretão

02:23

And each goal, each pass, each play
E cada gol, cada toque, cada jogada

02:28

Is a delight for the lovers of the british sport
É um deleite para os apaixonados do esporte bretão

A very interesting song, loaded with relgious imagery and allegory. Here, Jorge Ben appears to relate St. George (whose name, in Portuguese, is written “São Jorge”) to Zambi, a god of the Kongo religion.

00:37

He's the lion of the empire
Ele é leão do império

00:43

Knight of the immaculate horse
Cavaleiro do cavalo imaculado

00:50

Minister of Zambi
Supreme god of the Kongo religion
on Earth
Ministro de Zambi na Terra

00:56

The prince of all Africa
O príncipe de toda África

01:03

Hail the knight
Salve o cavaleiro

01:05

Knight of the immaculate horse
Cavaleiro do cavalo imaculado

01:10

Hail the knight
Salve o cavaleiro

01:11

In the same vein as “Taj Mahal,” this is a new version of the track “Zumbi” from his album “A Tábua de Esmeralda.” Please refer to that album's translation page for context on the historical figure of Zumbi.
